Jordan Essoe
To cut or not to cut

Jordan Essoe

After getting married at the age of 25, artist Jordan Essoe decided to get a vasectomy. He and his wife knew they didn’t want to have children and instead of using other means of birth control, Essoe decided to alter his body making it such that he could not procreate. Some would argue that procreation is our fundamental purpose and whether or not we believe that to be true, it’s difficult to ignore that. In an attempt to deeply understand and translate this choice, Essoe created a project titled Strictfathermodel where he chronicles the experience of his vasectomy in a 99 day multi-media show including a detailed video of the vasectomy and a series of semen paintings, both pre and post operation. What is fatherhood, how can we logically explain the fundamental impetus to procreate, how did Essoe’s family feel about this decision and what are the consequences of making the choice to change your body?
