Sounds of a City
Artist Jason Kahn explores the presence and perception of sound as an influential factor of a city’s identity in his piece, Unheard Zurich. In interviews with residents of Zurich, he asks them to describe their favorite city sound or, conversely, to disclose their favorite sound destination within city limits. This is followed by the matching field recordings; water lapping againt boats in the lake, a hypnotic hum, material being stretched. As a way of reflecting the international makeup of Zurich, the people who were interviewed answer in their native languages (Swiss German, English, Italian). Unheard Zurich is part of the series Unheard Cities, which investigates how people living in various cities relate to the sounds around them.
