Maya Lin
An Ongoing Memorial

Maya Lin

Artist and architect Maya Lin is one of America's most important artists working today and yet, when she was studying at Yale, she did not set out to become an artist. Her initial interest was in zoology but she somehow became involved in architecture and before she graduated, sent a proposal in for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. She was 21 years old and her piece was chosen. She has since continued to create memorials, and other works of course. She produced the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, The Women's Table at Yale and now What Is Missing?, a piece that brings her back to her initial interest: animals and their survival. What is Missing? is an ongoing and ever growing memorial with an online presence just as strong as its physical one. Maya Lin’s first multi-media project, What is Missing?, made its debut at The California Academy of Sciences.
