The Beauty of Outbursts
In 1988, journalist and TV presenter Jack Rebney was asked to star in a commercial for the Winnebago company. It was a hot day, the filming was going all wrong and Jack Rebney was having a hard time keeping his cool. The filmmakers saved every bit of tape and leaked the many outbursts that Rebney uttered over the course of filming the commercials. With the advent of YouTube, the outtakes went viral. They became an internet sensation. But Rebney himself was nowhere to be found. After the Winnebago experience, he fell off the grid. Nearly 20 years later, filmmaker Ben Steinbauer tracked down Rebney, aka "Winnebago Man," who was living on a California mountain top, completely unaware of his popularity and possibly not too excited to discover it. Michael Moore calls Winnebago Man one of the funniest documentaries ever made, but as this interview shows, it’s more about the importance and challenge of saying what you really think.
